Sliding T Bevel….
A sliding T bevel is a useful tools for setting and transferring angles. This is a sample of a pair of rosewood and brass sliding t-bevels. One is seven inches long and the larger one is eleven inches. Both have rosewood handles with solid brass edge treatments. The smaller one uses a turn button to lock the blade into place and the larger one used a brass lever. Part of the lever is broken off in this photo.
Sliding T Bevel – How it’s Used
The sliding T bevel is also known as a bevel gauge or false square. It’s an adjustable gauge for setting and transferring angles. A square is fixed and can only set a 90 degree angle, but the sliding T bevel can set any angle and transfer it on another piece.
What is the Sliding T Bevel Made Out Of
It is composed of two parts usually connected with a thumbscrew or wing nut that allows the blade to pivot and be locked at any angle. The handle is usually made of wood, metal, or plastic and the blade is metal. Vintage sliding T bevels were often made of rosewood or other hardwoods frequently with brass details and a steel blade. Newer T bevels were made of all steel.

It can be used by itself or with many other common layout tools such as a square, protractor, triangle, or framing square to set a desired angle. Then that angle can be transferred to another surface with this useful layout tool.
