This is a Stanley No. 4 Smooth Plane Type 20 in production during the years 1962 to 1967.
Indicators of a Type 20 Plane
- There is no patent date on the casting behind the frog.
- It does have the raised knob receiver ring in the casting beneath the front knob.
- The body is painted blue.
Other No. Plane Characteristics
The plane body measures 9 inches long and the cutter is 2 inches wide.
The body of this plane is painted blue, not the black jappaning of plane types prior to Type 20s. In addition to the raised ring in the casting beneath the front knob, the body also has a raised area beneath the handle. There is no patent date on the casting, but it does have “Bailey” at the front and “Made in USA” behind the frog. It has a smooth bottom and side.
The frog has the ogee shape and a lateral adjustment lever that does not include any words on it. It also has the large 1 1/4″ brass adjustment knob with straight knurling. It also has the frog adjustment screw at the back of the frog for moving the frog forward or backward to adjust the mouth opening.
The Lever Cap has the pear or kidney shaped hole. It has the word STANLEY with yellow paint behind it. It is also chrome plated.
The tall front knob and rear handle are made of hardwood and I believe these were painted black. They used the brass hour glass nuts to secure the handle and knob to the body.
The planes iron on this plane has no log but it says “Made in Canada” so that may be where this plane was made or the plane iron may not be original to this plane.
